08 Nov 2011 - This Week From Rider Land

1. It is time for Joe Pa to go. He has his all-time NCAA wins record. The scandal involving Jerry Sandusky is a growing mess of a situation that is only going to linger....and linger....and linger. Penn State needs to come out STRONG in this investigation and clean house. Sadly, it means Joe must go. The buck stops at the head coach's desk and cleaning house is the quickest and best way to handle things. Furthermore, PSU President Graham Spanier needs to keep quiet and not make ridiculous comments to the media as OSU President Gordon Gee did during the Tressel scandal. Who can forget:

"I hope coach Tressel doesn't fire me," Gordon Gee.

2. Who is a quiet candidate to possibly coach Ohio State or Penn State if there are openings not filled by Urban Meyer? How about Louisville head coach Charlie Strong? He served as Defensive Coordinator under Meyer at Florida and is doing a good job as head coach of the Louisville Cardinals. Louisville was in bad shape when Strong arrived. The program was "Kragthorped", as that is the term some Cardinal fans used.

3. LSU vs. Alabama rematch in the BCS title game? NO. In this system, you are supposed to be rewarded by going undefeated and punished by losing a game (or sometimes two). If Stanford or Boise are undefeated, they should get the shot first. And if Oregon beats Stanford....and shoots up the rankings....shouldn't they get the same chance for a rematch as Alabama?

02 Nov 2011 - Today's Rider Land Musings

Another Tiger football season has ended and it is hard to tell how we should evaluate it. Should we be excited that many players broke-in during 2011? Should we be excited about what returns for 2012? I would say YES to those questions. However, it is clear to this fan (my opinion) that we need to open up the offense in 2012 and better use the talents of Kyle Kempt. Furthermore, a serious strength and conditioning program needs implemented for our offensive linemen. Clearly, what was on display in the trenches wasn't good enough and that is being truthful.

2012's expectation should be a win over McKinley and a deep run in the playoffs. No excuses, no exceptions. This is Massillon!

The NCAA college football conference shuffling now has 6 schools being invited to El Spizo's beloved Big East: Air Force, Navy, Houston, SMU, Central Florida, and Boise State. With these six schools and the departure of West Virginia to the Big 12, that gives the Big Spizo Conference 11 members with rumors of Temple getting the nod for an even 12. (NOTE: We will now refer to the Big East as the Big Spizo in honor of A.J. Spize-El Spizo).

No, this REALLY isn't an automatically-qualifying caliber conference, but this writer feels that the BCS power brokers running NCAA football won't want the political headache and possible lawsuits that would result from a "demotion" of the Big Spizo Conference to non-AQ status. I think they'll keep that automatic-qualifying status. Why is that important? It means: You win the Big Spizo, you get an automatic BCS bowl game birth and the money that follows such a thing.

If I was the commissioner of the Big Spizo, I would also try to add BYU as a 13th member and another western school for an even 14. That extra western school could be someone like UNLV (for the Vegas market) or San Diego State. Why not just go all the way west? Or you could add Memphis, who has great basketball but crappy football.

I'm happy to see the Tribe did not resign Grady Sizemore. Maybe "Grady's Ladies" can get a life and now follow the Asian heart-throb Kosuke Fukudome. We could have the Fuku girls! As for Grady, the wind generated from his constant strikeouts could provide enough energy for one of those windmill projects that the greenies so love.
