Big Plays Key Tigers Victory

Brief bouts of rain last night could not keep the Tiger’s from avenging a tough loss at Parma Normandy last season. The Tiger’s were fired and ready to get into action. They were so fired up that the Tiger’s pre-emerged from the tunnel full steam ahead well before the band or the cheerleaders were ready for them.
Friday night in front of 7,158 fans the Tigers defeated Parma Normandy 45-14. Massillon’s victory was keyed by big plays early in the first half, hard hitting and well conditioned depth on both sides of the ball. Bo Grunder would start off the big play scoring for the Tiger’s as he took he fielded at punt deep in Massillon territory and using the entire field he zigged and zagged his way through the Normandy defenders and raced down the home field sidelines. When Grunder reached the end zone the final tally would be an 82 yard punt return. Grunder adding to his new found stardom as a Massillon Tiger would also later recover a fumble and nearly take a second punt back for a TD.
On Massillon’s very next possession, following a big stop by the Tiger defense and a punt out of bounds by Normandy, Mike Clark would take a bootleg around the left side and scamper 60 yards for a TD. The Tiger’s would get a fumble recovery on Normandy’s next possession which they quickly turned into another TD as Justin Turner would take it in from 6 yards out. JT’s TD was set up by another long run by Mike Clark (33yds). Midway through the second quarter it looked as if the route was on as the Tiger’s now lead 21-0
Normandy would answer back quickly as they were not phased by Massillon’s quick scoring. They stuck to their game plan and provided the Tiger defense with a steady dose of Jake Squirek and Michael Louis. On the night Normandy would rack up 341 yards rushing and 208 of those would come from Squirek. Squirek battered his way through Massillon’s defense forcing players to miss tackles, knocked backwards and in some instances carrying defenders for extra yardage. Both Squirek and Louis would get in the end zone before the end of the first half and Normandy would be right back in the game when half came to an end with the Tiger’s leading 21-14.
For the third straight week Massillon came out strong in the second half and looked as if they had made the proper adjustments to make stops defensively. The Tiger’s would get a defensive stop deep in their own territory as they stopped Normandy on 4th down at the Massillon 22 yard line. The momentum from the huge defensive stand would carry over to the offense as Normandy was worn down by the pounding running of Justin Turner. Justin would take his first carry of the drive 28 yards and then carried the ball 5 more times down to the 6 yard line. Two plays later JT was in the end zone again and the Tiger’s were up 28-14.
Normandy would not threaten again as they were wore down by the Tiger’s offense and were stuffed repeatedly by the Tiger’s defensive adjustments. With Normandy players playing on both sides of the ball it looked as if they had lost their legs and desire to fight on.
Massillon would score three more times on a JT 18 yard TD run, 30 yd FG by Jeremy Geier and a 10 yard bootleg run by Robert Partridge.
Overall the Tiger’s rebounded and responded well amongst the hurt of last week’s loss. The Tiger’s will face Youngstown Ursuline next week September 12th at Youngstown State University Stadium. Check the forum or the Massillon Independent for directions to the game. Youngstown Ursuline is 2-0 and plays Mentor Lake Catholic tonight
